It left Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyès as the dominant figure of the French government, and prefigured the coup of 18 Brumaire that brought Napoleon Bonaparte to power. ==Prelude== The Council of Five Hundred—the lower house in the legislature under the French Directory—had become unhappy with the directors' conduct of the war, and in particular with their recall of General Jean Étienne Vachier Championnet, a former Jacobin.
